
How to Insulate Conservatory Side Walls
A conservatory that feels pleasant in spring but becomes chilly by October is rarely suffering from one problem alone. However, if the solid sections feel cold to the touch, learning how to insulate conservatory side walls can make a meaningful difference to warmth, comfort and heating costs. The right approach depends on how the conservatory was built, how you use it and whether other elements, such as the roof or glazing, are also letting heat escape.
Why conservatory side walls can feel cold
Many older conservatories were designed primarily as seasonal spaces. They may have low brick walls, known as dwarf walls, or full-height walls built with limited insulation. Even where cavity insulation is present, it may not meet the standard expected in a modern extension.
Heat naturally moves towards colder surfaces. On a winter evening, an uninsulated wall draws warmth from the room, making the whole conservatory feel uncomfortable even with the heating on. Cold wall surfaces can also contribute to condensation, particularly where warm indoor air meets a poorly insulated corner, window reveal or wall junction.

How to insulate conservatory side walls effectively

Add internal wall insulation
For many homeowners, internal insulation is the most practical option. Consider cavity wall insulation where suitable
If the conservatory side walls have a clear cavity, filling it can improve warmth without reducing room size. This is a less disruptive solution in principle, but it is not suitable for every property. The wall needs to be in good condition, the cavity must be appropriate, and exposure to wind-driven rain must be considered.
A professional assessment is essential. Filling a cavity that has existing damp problems, poor brickwork or unsuitable exposure can make matters worse rather than better. Its limitations are mainly practical. The finish needs to suit the property, details around windows and doors need careful treatment, and changes to external appearance may require planning consideration depending on the home and location. For a small dwarf wall, internal insulation is often more proportionate. For a larger conservatory renovation, external insulation may be worth discussing as part of the overall design.
Do not insulate over damp or defects
Insulation is not a cure for water ingress. Before enclosing any wall, deal with cracked render, damaged pointing, leaking gutters, failed seals or rising damp. These issues can be harder to spot once a new lining has been installed and may lead to mould, staining and expensive remedial work later.
Pay particular attention to the points where the conservatory meets the main house. Flashings, roof junctions and door thresholds are common weak spots. A well-finished insulated wall will only perform as expected when the surrounding structure is dry, sound and properly sealed.
Think beyond the walls
Insulating side walls improves comfort, but it cannot turn a poorly performing conservatory into a year-round room on its own. The roof is often the largest source of heat loss and solar gain. Older polycarbonate roofs can make a room cold in winter, noisy in rain and uncomfortably hot in summer.
Replacing or upgrading glazing may also be more effective than wall work in a conservatory with large areas of dated glass. The floor should not be overlooked. A cold tiled or concrete floor can make the room feel draughty even when the air temperature is reasonable. Underfloor heating can feel luxurious, but it needs sufficient insulation beneath it to be efficient.
What about building regulations?
Whether building regulations apply will depend on the scope of the work and the status of the conservatory. A conservatory that is separated from the main home by external-quality doors may be treated differently from one that has been opened up into the house. Keep heavy furniture slightly clear of external walls where possible, particularly during the first winter after work. Well-positioned curtains or blinds can improve evening comfort too, but they are a secondary measure rather than an alternative to proper insulation.
Start with a full conservatory assessment
The most cost-effective improvement is not always the most obvious one. If the walls are the main cold surface, internal insulation may be the sensible first step. If the room has an ageing roof and single or early double glazing, a broader refurbishment could offer better long-term value and a more noticeable improvement in day-to-day use.
